The season start of the 2016 FIA World Touring Car Championship takes place this weekend at the legendary Paul Ricard circuit in France. Years of preparation will be put to the test for Polestar Cyan Racing as drivers Thed Björk and Fredrik Ekblom head out for the first two races in their brand new Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 race cars.

While the sights of Polestar Cyan Racing are set on the world title, endurance will be key to bringing it home. The first year will be all about learning: learning the circuits, the competition and the pace, especially in the very first races this weekend.

”This is the start of a completely new era for me personally and for the entire team, something I have dreamt about for a long time. We are coming well prepared but at the same time coming to something completely new. The goal for this weekend is to collect as much data as possible to continue building our foundation for our journey towards the top,” said Thed Björk, the reigning four-time STCC champion.

Team-mates Thed Björk and Fredrik Ekblom have raced together for Polestar Cyan Racing since 2012 and are close friends since many years, a cooperation vital for the coming challenges.

”While the pre-season testing in Vallelunga showed promising pace, both me and Thed have been on this level of motorsport for so long that we know that it is too early to draw any conclusions. It will be extremely interesting this weekend to see where we are compared to our competitors that have many years behind them in this championship, while we start with a clean sheet of paper. I am urging to get going and it will be a big moment for us all in the team to start this journey,” said Fredrik Ekblom, three-time STCC champion.

The season opening weekend in France starts with testing on Friday, practice and qualifying on Saturday and two races on Sunday. The race weekend is the first of 12 this season on four continents around the world where Polestar Cyan Racing will meet 18 drivers in 10 teams from Citroën, Honda, Chevrolet and Lada. ”Our purpose with this programme is to become World Champions. But this year is about following a specific plan to learn, with high discipline required from the drivers, engineers and the entire team in order for the competitiveness not to take over. The Volvo S60 Polestar TC1

The Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 is an all-new race car built by Polestar Cyan Racing specifically for the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC).

The S60 Polestar TC1 is a state-of-the-art race car, weighing a mere 1100 kg and powered by a Volvo Cars Drive-E race engine that delivers 400 horsepower. Unlike competitor race cars, this engine is based completely on the one found in Volvo consumer cars.

WTCC 2016 : Polestar Cyan Racing Top Départ!

L’ouverture de la saison 2016 du Championnat du Monde FIA des Voitures de Tourisme (WTCC) aura lieu ce week-end, en France, sur le mythique Circuit Paul Ricard. L’entrée en piste des pilotes Thed Björk et Fredrik Ekblom pour les deux premières courses, au volant de Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 flambant neuves, sanctionnera plusieurs années de préparation pour l’écurie Polestar Cyan Racing.

Quelques chiffres avant le départ :
• 20 pilotes et 11 teams sont engagés dans le WTCC 2016
• Le WTCC 2016, c’est 12 courses sur quatre continents
• Le Circuit Paul Ricard a accueilli 14 courses de F1 entre 1971 et 1990
• L’écurie Polestar Cyan Racing est la seule à utiliser comme moteur de base celui d’une routière, le Drive-E de Volvo Cars
• Ce week-end, les pilotes disputeront deux courses de 16 et 17 tours

Polestar Cyan Racing compte bien ramener le titre mondial en Suède mais il faudra faire preuve d’endurance et de patience. La première année, il va falloir apprendre : découvrir les circuits, trouver ses marques et prendre le rythme, en particulier sur les premières courses, ce week-end.

« C’est le début d’une toute nouvelle ère pour moi et pour tout le team, un rêve de longue date qui se réalise enfin. Nous sommes bien préparés, mais en terre inconnue. L’objectif pour ce week-end est de collecter autant d’informations que possible pour nous donner les moyens de notre ascension jusqu’au sommet », explique Thed Björk, quadruple vainqueur et champion en titre du STCC, le Championnat Scandinave des Voitures de Tourisme.

Les coéquipiers Thed Björk et Fredrik Ekblom courent ensemble pour Polestar Cyan Racing depuis 2012 et sont très proches dans la vie, ce qui favorise la coopération, vitale pour relever tous les défis qui les attendent.

« Les essais d’avant-saison à Vallelunga sont prometteurs, mais Thed et moi évoluons à ce niveau de la compétition depuis assez longtemps pour savoir qu’il est trop tôt pour tirer des conclusions. Le week-end s’annonce passionnant : nous pourrons enfin nous mesurer à nos concurrents qui connaissent le championnat sur le bout des doigts alors que nous partons de zéro. J’ai hâte de prendre le départ, ce sera un grand moment pour toute l’équipe », s’enthousiasme Fredrik Ekblom, triple vainqueur du STCC.

Le week-end d’ouverture de la saison en France démarre vendredi avec les tests. La journée de samedi sera consacrée aux essais libres et aux qualifications et les deux courses de la première manche auront lieu dimanche. Ce week-end de compétition est le premier des 12 que compte la saison sur quatre continents. L’écurie Polestar Cyan Racing se mesurera à 18 pilotes de 10 teams portant les couleurs de Citroën, Honda, Chevrolet et Lada.

« Notre objectif à terme est de décrocher le titre de Champion du monde. Mais cette année, nous nous en tiendrons à notre objectif : apprendre. Les pilotes comme les ingénieurs et le reste de l’équipe vont devoir être très rigoureux pour ne pas se laisser submerger par l’aspect purement compétitif. Un grand week-end nous attend – le premier d’une longue série – et nous sommes heureux de nous lancer dans ce nouveau défi sur un circuit comme Paul Ricard », a déclaré Alexander Murdzevski Schedvin, Responsable de la division Sports automobiles chez Polestar.

La Volvo S60 Polestar TC1 est une toute nouvelle voiture de course spécialement préparée par Polestar Cyan Racing pour le Championnat du Monde FIA des Voitures de Tourisme (WTCC).
C’est un véhicule de pointe d’à peine 1 100 kg bénéficiant d’un moteur Drive-E Volvo Cars développant 400 ch. Contrairement à la concurrence, ce moteur repose exclusivement sur celui des Volvo de tourisme.
