Bowers & Wilkins: Live Streaming Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. 7937

A very special event in Gothenburg saw some of the world’s most respected audio journalists treated to a unique performance by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra courtesy of Bowers & Wilkins and Volvo Cars.
The new Volvo XC90, S90, V90 and V90 Cross Country with Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins use key technologies such as Tweeter-on-Top and Kevlar® midrange drive units to deliver realistic, pristine sound to all passengers in the car. They also come with three selectable audio modes, including a unique Gothenburg Concert Hall option. This mode recreates the acoustics inside this world-class concert hall and was developed with the aid of some 800 acoustics measurements made within the hall, plus powerful high-end processing in order to replicate it in the car cabin.
To experience the live performance through the Premium Sound by Bowers & Wilkins, a selection of the new 90 series cars was parked outside the Gothenburg Concert Hall itself. Then with iPhones connected via the system’s Apple CarPlay functionality, the press fired up the new GSOplay app. This new app allows simultaneous live and recorded concerts from the hall to be streamed to subscribers anywhere in the world.

The press, who were from countries as far afield as the UK, USA, Japan and China, had earlier been given a behind-the-scenes tour of Volvo’s Audio Lab, before being treated to an exclusive broadcast of the first act taking place inside the concert hall – a performance that included Tchaikovsky’s epic Romeo and Juliet. In order to attest to the realistic sound of the system, they then went inside the hall itself for the second act of the concert.
Summing up the experience, Bowers and Wilkins Senior Product Manager Andy Kerr said: “This was a really novel listening experience and a great success. I think everyone was genuinely amazed at just how effective it was!”
