Polestar reveals new Polestar 2

Polestar has taken the next step in its development as the electric performance brand with the reveal of the new Polestar 2. Polestar 2 is the new all-electric fastback that brings electric performance cars to a broader and increasingly progressive audience. It offers avant-garde design and a unique customer experience in the premium compact electric segment. Polestar 2 is the first electric car to compete in the marketplace around the Tesla Model 3, with the range starting at a guide price of 39,900 euros. For the first 12 months of production, guide price of the launch edition is 59,900 euros¹.

Polestar 2 is a premium five-door fastback with two electric motors and a 78 kWh battery capacity² that will enable a targeted range of 500 km³, based on Volvo Car Group’s adaptable Compact Modular Architecture platform (CMA). The 27-module battery pack is integrated into the floor and contributes to the rigidity of the chassis as well as improves the car’s noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels – road noise has been reduced by 3.7 dB compared to a traditional chassis.

Polestar will answer the important question of charging Polestar 2 with a smart, convenient and extensive approach. With a connected digital solution available both in-car and on mobile devices, Polestar is setting up strategic collaborations to give Polestar 2 owners easy and hassle-free access to the world’s largest public charging networks.

For Polestar, performance underlies the entire driving experience. The all-wheel drive electric powertrain in Polestar 2 produces 300 kW (408 hp) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft). This translates to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of less than 5 seconds.

The standard dynamic chassis can be enhanced by the Performance Pack that improves driving dynamics with Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes and unique 20-inch forged wheels. Polestar’s signature gold seat belts, brake callipers and valve caps complete the performance visuals.

Highlighting the technology spearhead role that Polestar plays within the Volvo Car Group, Polestar 2 is one of the first cars in the world to embed an infotainment system powered by Android. The Android backbone provides a solid and adaptable digital environment for apps and vehicle functions to coexist, and brings embedded Google services to a car for the first time – including the Google Assistant, Google Maps with support for electric vehicles and the Google Play Store⁵. Natural voice control and a new 11-inch touch screen display bring the new interface to life.

Phone-as-Key technology enables car sharing and a more integrated ownership experience, as well as Polestar’s connected services such as pick-up and delivery. It also allows Polestar 2 to sense the driver upon approach. Smart features like enlarged graphics in the instrument cluster allow the driver to easily see the charging status and range before entering the car. Polestar 2 can also predetermine the driver’s next move to create a seamless experience with a prepared cabin and quick start sequence.

Maximilian Missoni, head of Design at Polestar, comments: “We decided to bring something different to the segment. Our avant-garde design has evolved from Polestar 1 into an edgier, bolder statement. We have also designed a standard vegan interior with progressive textiles that will appeal to the forward-thinking audience who will subscribe to Polestar 2.”

Design-led features include Pixel LED headlights⁴ and proximity lighting which enable a unique welcome sequence, Polestar’s now-signature frameless side mirrors and the unique illuminated Polestar logo, which is reflected onto the car’s panoramic glass roof.

In common with all Polestar cars, Polestar 2 will only be available for ordering online. The guide purchase price for the launch version of Polestar 2 is 59,900 euros¹ with subscription pricing to follow at a later date. Pre-orders are open at polestar.com. Production of Polestar 2 begins in early 2020 in China for global markets in both left- and right-hand drive.

Polestar 2 will make its first public appearance at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in March, and then embark on a global roadshow in Europe, North America and China throughout 2019. Polestar 2 will also be available in a network of soon-to-be-opened Polestar Spaces that will provide physical viewing and test drive opportunities.

Initial launch markets include China, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK. Other markets are under consideration for future expansion.

Designed for purpose, performance and progression

The Polestar 2 is an avant-garde 5-door fastback, packed with distinctive design flourishes. A hollow, hexagonal gear shifter with an illuminated Polestar in the centre. Rear lights which stretch the entire width of the car. These details don’t just give the Polestar 2 its unique look. They’re also the intersecting points of form and function, establishing the Polestar 2 as a versatile, modern, progressive electric car.

Details that deliver

The fastback body shape means a lower drag coefficient, leading to enhanced aerodynamic performance. The side mirrors are frameless, which maximises the field of vision available to the driver. Adaptive rear lighting, in which the 288 LED rear lamp shines more intensely with stronger braking, illuminate differently depending on the weather, and provide a visual signal as to which direction the car is reversing. All of these innovations create a unique, responsive experience, for those inside the car and outside.

Welcome and farewell sequences

These are patterns which the front and rear lights display when one approaches or walks away from the vehicle. A futuristic detail which adds a bit of additional flavour to the Polestar 2. There’s also the Polestar logo which is projected onto the panoramic glass roof from the overhead panel inside, providing potent symbolism while also adding to the ambience of the car. The panoramic roof itself is made from laminated glass, which remains intact even if it’s broken or shattered. The roof lamination also reduces solar radiation within the car, to the point where sunshades aren’t necessary.

The next step in sound

Polestar has partnered with audio experts Harman Kardon to fit the Polestar 2 with a fully integrated sound system to create an immersive, detailed audio environment. Why Harman Kardon? Besides their obvious expertise, they’re a kindred spirit to Polestar, delivering innovations which set them apart. One example is their Dirac Unison© tuning software, which ensures that everyone in the car enjoys the same powerful, immersive listening experience regardless of where they’re sitting, while also providing a tight, unified bass sound. An innovative detail, nestled in a car full of them.

Storage solutions

The tailgate of the Polestar 2 has its hinge at the top of the window, granting unrestricted access to the entirety of the trunk. With multiple options available for opening and closing (via the Polestar Connect app, a button on the dash, a button on the lid itself, and a sensor under the bumper), there are no drawbacks to a larger-than-usual tailgate. Just the benefits of 404-litre (VDA) luggage capacity, further augmented by the 34-litre front storage compartment.

Car-driver integration

With phone-as-key, intelligent seat sensors, and responsive accessibility, the Polestar 2 adjusts to the driver, as opposed to the other way around. No offense to your former cars, but the Polestar 2 is the car that really understands you.

Subscription model

A car doesn’t have to be a colossal, one-time expense on which you lose money the second you begin to drive. Polestar feels that car ownership should more closely resemble phone ownership: an all-inclusive monthly fee, with the option to return or upgrade at the end of your term, without any hassle or headache. Polestar’s future subscription model makes this a reality, with a monthly price including a host of services which allow you to focus on the joys of having a Polestar.

Reactive readiness

The Polestar 2 begins to prepare itself even as the driver approaches. Once the presence of the digital key is detected, the display shows pertinent information: battery status, range, and the time remaining to a full charge. No time wasted, no fiddling with menus; the Polestar 2 tells you what you need to know, before you even open the door.

Welcome back to the driver’s seat

The phone is the authentication device. Thanks to the Polestar Connect app, it also serves to remind the Polestar 2 just how you like it. Seat position, mirror settings, and more are automatically returned to your exact specifications. The Polestar 2 fits the driver like a glove. A glove with 660Nm of torque.

Owner-as-key

There is no start button in the Polestar 2. The Polestar 2 powers up as soon as the driver is seated, the intelligent sensors in the seat signalling to the car’s systems that it’s go time. No more patting yourself down for your keys, no more flicking switches, no more searching for buttons. Up until now, you’ve just sat on it. Now it starts your car.

Wireless phone charging

Polestar removes yet another in-car awkward fumble, offering wireless inductive phone charging without any extra equipment. Simply place the phone in the forward part of the tunnel console and drive on. Upon arrival, your phone will be as charged up and ready for action as you are.

Il y a aussi le logo Polestar projeté sur le toit panoramique en verre à partir du panneau supérieur à l’intérieur, procurant un puissant symbolisme tout en améliorant l’ambiance de la voiture. Le toit panoramique fabriqué en verre feuilleté demeure intact même s’il est brisé ou fracassé. Le feuilletage du toit réduit également le rayonnement solaire dans la voiture, au point que les pare-soleils ne sont plus nécessaires.

Un système audio haut de gamme

Polestar s’est associé à Harman Kardon, une entreprise experte en audio, pour équiper la Polestar 2 d’un système de sonorisation entièrement intégré, afin de créer un environnement acoustique immersif et précis. Pourquoi Harman Kardon ? En plus de leur savoir-faire évident, ils sont sur la même longueur d’onde que Polestar et proposent des innovations qui les distinguent. Solutions de rangement

La charnière du hayon de la Polestar 2 est située en haut de la fenêtre, permettant un accès illimité à l’ensemble du coffre. Avec de multiples options d’ouverture et de fermeture proposées (au moyen de l’application, d’un bouton sur le tableau de bord, d’un autre sur le hayon même et d’un capteur sous le pare-chocs), il n’y a que des avantages à avoit un hayon plus grand que d’habitude. À commencer par un coffre de 404 litres (VDA), auxquels s’ajoute le compartiment frontal de 34 litres.

Les options de matériaux et de couleurs de la Polestar 2 ont été choisies avec soin. Une gamme précise de personnalisations permet de configurer la Polestar 2 en fonction de vos préférences, et chaque élément concorde parfaitement avec le reste. Des matériaux intérieurs végan de série, des éléments de décoration en frêne noir et en bois reconstitué, des panneaux de surface en textile et le cuir Nappa en option ne sont que quelques-uns des détails qui rendent l’intérieur de Polestar 2 à la fois intemporel et unique.

La Polestar 2 commence à se préparer alors même que le conducteur s’approche. Le téléphone est le périphérique d'authentification. Grâce à l'application Polestar Connect, il sert également à rappeler à la Polestar 2 quelles sont vos préférences. La position du siège, les réglages des rétroviseurs, ainsi que tous vos paramètres reviennent automatiquement à vos préférences. La Polestar 2 va comme un gant au conducteur. Vous êtes la clé

Il n'y a pas de bouton de démarrage dans la Polestar 2. Dès que le conducteur est assis, la Polestar 2 est mise sous tension. Les capteurs intelligents du siège signalent aux systèmes de la voiture que le moment est venu de démarrer. Plus besoin de chercher vos clés dans vos affaires, de parcourir et d'appuyer sur les boutons de la console centrale. Jusqu'à présent, vous ne faisiez que vous asseoir sur le siège conducteur. Recharge de téléphone sans fil

Polestar supprime une autre distraction dans la voiture, en offrant la recharge inductive sans fil de téléphone, sans aucun équipement supplémentaire. Il suffit de placer le téléphone dans la partie avant de la console centrale et de continuer à conduire. À votre arrivée, votre téléphone sera rechargé et prêt pour l'action, comme vous.
