A Volvo… Utility Vehicle…??????? 5255

For the first time, I believe, Volvo has decided to market a commercial version of one of its vehicles, and it's the EX30 that's taking on the role.

While it's not unprecedented for a luxury vehicle manufacturer to offer a commercial variant, it's still worth noting that this approach is rare. Off the top of my head, the only one that comes to mind is the Land Rover Defender, but given the vehicle's intended purpose, that makes a bit more sense.

Turning an entry-level vehicle into a commercial vehicle is a truly strange choice. Well, apparently, for the moment, this is a transformation project undertaken by Volvo Cars UK and isn't available in other markets. Nevertheless, it remains the complete opposite of the philosophy of luxury and comfort associated with a modern Volvo, even if it is only the brand's entry-level model.

Now, why not? Imagine a craftsman or entrepreneur who doesn't necessarily need a huge amount of transport space but would instead like a vehicle that offers real comfort and is more elegant, projecting a better image than a simple utility vehicle. A florist, for example; it's not unreasonable in this scenario.

Perhaps Volvo is trying unexpected variations to try to compensate for the loss of the American market and avoid job losses in Ghent?

Une Volvo…. Utilitaire…….???????

Volvo Car UK introduces its first commercial vehicle: the fully electric EX30 Cargo

Volvo Car UK has expanded its electric vehicle line-up with the introduction of the EX30 Cargo, a new car-derived van designed specifically for business and fleet customers.

  • Volvo Car UK unveils the EX30 Cargo, a new car-derived van based on the fully electric EX30
  • Available as both EX30 Cargo and EX30 Cross Country Cargo for enhanced ground clearance
  • Designed for business and fleet customers requiring practical load space with premium comfort and safety
  • Available exclusively through Volvo fleet sales channels, priced from £36,010 on the road

Developed from the fully electric EX30 compact SUV, the new Cargo variant delivers additional practicality and load-carrying capability while retaining the comfort, technology and safety of its passenger cars.

To create the cargo bay, the rear seats have been replaced with a flat floor and an access panel to the lower floor, maximising the payload to 390kg and a load capacity of 1,000 litres. A specially designed payload bulkhead separates the cabin from the cargo area, while modified rear side panels and doors increase available load volume.

Created through a second-stage conversion by Volvo Car UK, the EX30 Cargo transforms the electric SUV into a highly practical commercial vehicle available in two variants: the EX30 Cargo and the EX30 Cross Country Cargo which offers additional ground clearance. The conversion can be applied to both newly ordered vehicles and existing stock, making it available across Model Year (MY) 2026 and Model Year 2027 vehicles.

For MY27, the new P3 (150hp) Extended Range powertrain will be introduced for customers who require lower power output than the P5 (272hp) while still benefiting from impressive electric range of up to 300 miles.

Further enhancing practicality, the EX30 Cargo also benefits from extended rear door access, allowing the doors to open wider for easier loading. An additional cargo work light improves visibility within the load area, while the underfloor subframe introduces extra securing and mounting points to support a range of commercial uses.

Jack Munford, Head of Fleet at Volvo Car UK, said: “While we are best known for our passenger vehicles, we recognise that business owners and fleets also want the quality, safety and technology that Volvo is renowned for in a compact commercial vehicle too, which is why we created the extremely practical EX30 Cargo.”

The EX30 Cargo continues to meet Volvo’s stringent safety standards. The vehicle has undergone comprehensive testing to ensure that all safety systems perform as intended, maintaining the high levels of protection that all Volvo vehicles offer.

The vehicle is available with the P3 (150hp) or P5 (272hp) powertrains in Extended Range form or P5 and with the standard range. The powerful P8 (428hp) All Wheel Drive powertrain is also offered for those seeking even higher performance. Two trims are available: Core and Plus, alongside the Cross Country Plus.

As standard, the EX30 Cargo Core is generously equipped, including Safe Space Technology and Google Automotive Services, alongside Adaptive Cruise Control. Front and rear Park Assist, complemented by a rear Park Assist camera, make parking and manoeuvring effortless, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensure seamless connectivity on the move.

Automatic LED headlights provide improved visibility, and the 3-phase 11 kW onboard charger with heat pump supports efficient electric driving. The specification is complemented with 18” Aero alloy wheels.

Building on the already standard specification, the EX30 Cargo Plus adds a host of comfort, convenience and design enhancements, including Pilot Assist and Digital Key Plus.

The cabin is elevated with a Harman Kardon premium sound system, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, while two-zone climate control and wireless phone charging further improve usability. Exterior styling is enhanced with a dual-tone roof and 19” Aero alloy wheels.

The EX30 Cargo is on sale now, priced from £36,010 OTR (P5 standard range) and is available exclusively through Volvo Car UK’s fleet sales channels.
